Workflow

Patents — Where to Look

Google Patents, Espacenet, USPTO, WIPO (PCT), J-PlatPat. Check family members, INPADOC legal status, and cited-by trees.

Papers — Where to Look

PubMed, IEEE Xplore, arXiv/bioRxiv, DOAJ, Google Scholar. Track cited-by growth and related articles.

Follow the Breadcrumbs

Use “cited by” and “related” hops. Harvest assignees, inventors, and keywords to expand the net.

Manage References

Keep a simple Zotero/EndNote/Notion library. Tag by modality (audio/ultrasound/PEMF/ELF/optical), target (cell type), and outcome.

Patent Strength Cues

Clear embodiments, repeatable parameters, working examples, independent claims breadth, prosecution history, citations by others.

Red Flags

Vague dose/parameters, shifting endpoints, absence of controls, irreproducible geometry, sensational claims.

Keep Both Baskets

Track mainstream and edge separately; compare convergences (overlapping frequency windows, duty cycles, or exposure times).

Signal Over Noise

Signal Parameters

Frequency window(s), waveform, amplitude unit (Vpp, mT, mW/cm²), duty cycle, exposure duration, session count, total dose.

Geometry & Coupling

Coil/plate/form factor, distance, orientation, support conditions, placement on body/object, shielding.

Population/Model

Cell line/animal/human; N; inclusion/exclusion; baseline comparability.

Outcomes & Stats

Primary endpoints, effect sizes, p/CI, replicates, adverse events, follow-up duration.

Data Extraction & Normalization

Comparable

Normalize Units

Convert amplitudes to a consistent unit; note assumptions (e.g., field drop with distance). Keep raw too.

Map to Buckets

Group by modality (audio/ultrasound/PEMF/optical), target (tissue/system), and frequency band (ELF/alpha/theta/etc.).

Summaries

Per bucket, list the 3 most consistent parameter ranges and typical exposure times with references.

Visuals

Make simple charts later (not here): frequency vs. outcome strength, dose vs. response, etc.

Replication Notes & Lab Hygiene

Repeatability

One Variable at a Time

Change only one parameter between runs. Document environment (temp, noise, interference sources).

Pre-Reg Lite

Write your intent and endpoints before you start. Even two bullet points help avoid post-hoc bias.

Record Failures

Negative or null outcomes are precious. Log them; they prune dead ends.

Share Carefully

If posting, include parameters and caveats. Avoid location/device doxxing if sensitive.

Care

Respect patent rights; personal research ≠ commercial use. Check jurisdictions and claim scope.
Safety first: low levels, proper insulation, no mains or high voltage without training. Mind photosensitive and medical-device users.
Citations: give credit; distinguish hypothesis from evidence. No medical claims.

Edge papers contradict mainstream—what then?

Bucket separately, extract parameters, and look for convergences. Prioritize reproducibility and safety.

Best way to avoid bias?

Pre-declare outcomes, use a simple rubric for triage, and log nulls. Comfort & caution > intensity.
